How to Get to Sanam Luang

Sanam Luang is the open ceremonial square directly in front of the Grand Palace in Phra Nakhon, Bangkok's old city. The square itself is closed to traffic, so the easiest way to arrive is by MRT, river boat or taxi dropped nearby, then a short walk in.

By MRT (subway)

Take the Blue Line to Sanam Chai Station. Use Exit 1 and walk north along Sanam Chai Road for about 5 minutes; the square opens up on your right. This is the most reliable option and avoids Bangkok traffic.

By Chao Phraya Express Boat

River services stop at Tha Chang Pier (pier N9), about a 10-minute walk from the square. Orange-flag boats are the cheap commuter option; tourist boats also call here.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai, then a taxi or Grab for the final leg, roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. A direct taxi from the airport takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Always confirm the meter or agree a fare before departing.

From Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

DMK is north of the city. A taxi or Grab to Sanam Luang usually takes 30 to 45 minutes; during peak hours allow more. The SRT Dark Red Line reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat, where you can change to a taxi for the last stretch.

By bus, taxi or Grab

Public buses run along Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, but routes and numbers change, so check the latest on the BMTA or a maps app. Taxis and Grab can drop you on Sanam Chai Road or near Tha Chang; ask to be set down a short walk from the square because the frontage road is closed.

Parking

There is no public parking on the square itself. Use paid lots near the Grand Palace, ICONSIAM (then a boat to Tha Chang), or park-and-ride at an MRT station and ride in. Arrive early on weekends and ceremony days, when the area fills up.
